This society was established as the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Research Society, the third research society of the Korean Neurosurgical Society, through the general meeting of the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Research Society and the first academic meeting on December 19, 1987. Thanks to the improvement of the research society, it was renamed as the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society on December 17, 1999 after approval by the Korean Neurosurgical Society.

1) Purpose of establishment: This society is to improve clinical and basic research of spinal neurosurgery and to promote academic communication and social intimacy between members.
2) The Spinal Neurosurgery Research Society establishment committee was organized by Professor Hwan Yung Chung, Hanyang University, as a leader and the committee submitted the application for the establishment to the Korean Neurosurgical Society. On October 22, 1987, the application was approved in the full meeting of director boards of the Korean Neurosurgical Society, and then the research society became the third research society under the Korean Neurosurgical Society by the announcement in the annual meeting on October 23, 1987. The inaugural meeting of the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Research Society and the first academic meeting were held in Hanyang University Medical Center on December 19, 1987, where total 58 members attended. In the meeting, Hwan Yung Chung, was elected as the first president; Young Soo Kim as a director of general affairs; Sang Jin Kim, Soo Han Kim, Jae Hong Shim, Hyeon Jib Kim, Bak Jang Byeon, Jung Keun Suh, Myoung Soo Ahn, Moon Bae Joo, as directors; and, Sun Gil Choi, Sang Won Lee, as supervisors. Total 23 directors were also elected including In Hong Kim. Since 1997, the Korea-Japan Conference on Spinal Surgery has been held biennially in Korea or Japan alternately with the Japanese Society of Spinal Surgery.
In the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society, six research societies, including Korean Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Research Society, Korean Cervical Spine Research Society, Korean Spinal Deformity Research Society, Korean Spinal Basic Research Society, Korean Spinal Osteoporosis Research Society, and Korean Spinal Oncology Research Society, were established and are actively studying specific topics.
Our society published the "Textbook of Spine" which describes broad knowledge of spine in. Korean journal of Spine which is the official journal of the society has been one of the candidate journals of the registered journals of Korean national research foundation. We launched the first Asia spine conference with Japan, Taiwan, China and Australia in September 9th-11th, 2010, and the fourth Asia spine conference at October 3rd-5th, 2013.

nce the establishment of Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Research Society or Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society, a lot of annual academic meetings have been held including many international meetings and domestic annual meetings or training seminars. Detailed activities are described as below:
Domestic activities: Since 1987 at the time of establishment, domestic annual academic meetings have been held. Total 20 meetings were held in the year of 2014. A lot of members, invited speakers, and related specialists have been invited to the meeting, where active academic correspondence has been made. And, the meeting has annually provided opportunities to discuss recent opinions of spinal disease treatment through special lectures by foreign invited speakers.
